These past few days have been chicken-heavy around here. With two different flocks of pullets in the grow-out pens and winter coming, we have to start moving the girls to where they need to be until spring. And, of course, I have my camera with me the whole time – and it is full of chicken photos. This is a favorite.

Due to the upheaval of the pandemic and the strangeness of changed routines and seemingly endless days that blur into uncounted weeks, we had gotten out of our regular rhythm of hatching and raising chickens. I had been eagerly waiting for our oldest group of Buff Orpington pullets to begin laying. I wondered why they were taking so much longer than those before them. That is, until this afternoon when I pulled out the written records (Yes, this is why we write things down.) and found that they are only just now approaching laying age. We can relax again, knowing that they are all doing just fine. Now to figure out what to do with that young rooster that had gone unnoticed among the girls for the last few months…
